Amsterdam: the city of canals, bicycles and beautiful row houses. I never imagined Amsterdam to be the first European city I would visit, but I’m glad it was.
With a population of less than 1 million, the city felt surprisingly calm and welcoming. The city embodied what a local described to me as gezellig: a cozy, sense of belonging. The moment I stepped off the plane, I felt it. Navigation was difficult at first, with hidden street signs and a never ending blend of row houses, but I eventually found my footing.
The warning bells and rush of bicycles flying by, the crooked shop windows and entrances, and the view of the canals felt so unreal. The contrast between home and here was stark. With an abundance of art galleries, museums, shops, and great food, it’s no wonder why people fall in love with Amsterdam everyday.
I certainly fell under the city’s charm.
Until next time.
